What is included in an MOT?

Major parts of your car that will be tested during your MOT Test, will include:

Brakes – The efficiency and balance of the brakes will be tested on a roller brake tester, to ensure your vehicle can stop within recommended braking distances.
Steering and Suspension – The steering and suspension of your vehicle will be tested on a ramp, to check the condition of components, such as the steering column, the lower coupling, rack and pinion systems, and universal joints etc.
Emissions – The exhaust emissions of your vehicle must not exceed the recommended levels set out by the DVLA, and if they do, you will be required to get the issue resolved before receiving your MOT Test certificate.
Bodywork – The bodywork of your vehicle, including the doors, boot and bonnet will be checked for corrosion, structural damage or whether it’s had any substandard repairs etc. Although light surface corrosion usually passes inspection, anything more severe will often mean a fail and will need to be made good before an MOT Test certificate can be awarded.

Why does your car need an MOT?

Any car (over three years old) driven on UK roads, is required by law to have an MOT (Ministry of Transport) Test. The MOT Test is a standard, annual safety test, designed to ensure your car is roadworthy, and reaches standards set out by the DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency).
