Worn

If your tyres are worn you could be putting yourself and other road users’ lives at risk. You could also receive points on your licence as well as a large fine.

The penalty for each tyre is a fine of over £2000 and 3 points on your licence. The legal limit is currently 1.6mm tread depth across the central 75% of the tyre. If all of your vehicle’s tyres fall below the legal limit you could face a fine of £10,000 and risk losing your driving licence.

Incorrectly Inflated

Your vehicle’s steering, handling and road holding can be affected if its tyres are incorrectly inflated. It can also mean that:

  • Stopping distances are increased
  • Fuel consumption increases
  • Faster wear meaning tyres need to be replaced quicker
  • A less comfortable ride for you and your passengers

When to replace your tyres

Tyres are one of the most important safety elements to our vehicles, whether they’re van tyres or car tyres, but they’re also one of the most neglected elements. Below are 5 signs that could mean you need to replace your tyres soon.

1. When the tread depth is low

The tread on your tyres has two key safety functions, including:

  • Helping your vehicle to grip the road
  • Helping to displace water on the roads surface to improve the vehicles control in wet conditions.

Because of these factors, it’s vital you change your tyres once the tread reaches the legal depth of 1.6mm. The most important reason for doing this is safety, but also, failing to change your tyres at this stage could result in penalty points, a harsh fine, or in extreme cases, the loss of your licence.

2. When you notice damage

When you examine your tyres, if you notice any cracks, splits or bulges, you need to replace them as soon as possible. Damage to tyres may sometimes look minimal, but at speed or as you drive over potholes etc., the stress around the cracks or splits increases and could result in a blowout and the subsequent loss of control of your vehicle.

3. When you’ve had a puncture

Often, punctures can be repaired by a qualified technician, but, there are many occasions where a repair isn’t possible and the tyre will need replacing. If you’ve had a puncture and had it temporarily repaired, get it inspected by a tyre specialist as soon as possible.

4. When you notice uneven wear

When inspecting your tyres, look out for patches where the tread is smoother on one side than the other. If you do notice this uneven wear, it could be a sign the tyres are incorrectly balanced or there could be fault with the vehicles tracking, braking or suspension system. Whatever the reason, if your tyres are showing signs of uneven wear, it’s best to get them replaced.

5. When your tyres are old

Like other components on your vehicle, tyres deteriorate with age, even if you rarely use the vehicle. As a general rule, if you haven’t changed your tyres within the last five years, it’s best to get them inspected by a tyre specialist.

To check the age of your tyres, look along the sidewall, where you’ll find a 4-digit code imprinted. This code identifies the week of production and the year. For example 3819 tells you that the tyre was manufactured on the 38th week of 2019.
